German television ARD broadcast a documentary on Russian state doping in 2014 after the Sochi Winter Games. The world anti-doping agency WADA then commissioned the McLaren Report, which confirmed state-organized doping. As a result, 43 Sochi Russian athletes, including 16 medalists, were disqualified in 2017. 42 lodged an appeal with the International Court of Sport (CAS), 28 of them got the right because the evidence was insufficient. The disqualifications were lifted and their medals were returned. However, they were not allowed to take part in the 2018 Winter Games.
