The German brothers Franz and Toni Schmid cycled from Munich to the Matterhorn. Even though the Matterhorn had already been climbed on July 14, 1865, they had not yet climbed it via the north face. The brothers managed to complete this ascent on August 1, 1931. When the gold medal was awarded, Toni Schmid was already dead; he had died in the Hohe Tauern in Austria in May 1932.
