Johann Mühlegg, a German who started for Spain, was the big star of the Salt Lake City Winter Games. He had won cross country gold in the 20km pursuit, over 30km freestyle and in the final 50km race in the classic style. But a few hours before the graduation ceremony, the bomb burst! The big star was doped with EPO! A huge scandal! The media compared his case with that of Ben Johnson at the 1988 Seoul Games. Mühlegg was disqualified, the gold medal re-awarded and also on the places of the silver and bronze medal moved to new athletes.
