The gold medal was awarded to the participants of the 1922 Mount Everest expedition. Led by the British Charles Bruce, the expedition had set out to climb the highest mountain in the world on the Chinese-Nepalese border. The expedition failed to reach the summit in three attempts. On the third attempt, seven Sherpas died in an avalanche. Bill Strutt accepted the awards as Bruce was busy preparing for another expedition. George Mallory died in 1924 while attempting another ascent of Mount Everest. However, his final fate was not fully clarified until 1999, when his body was found after 75 years.
