This event was the first in Olympic history where the first and second of doping were convicted! The Russians Olga Danilowa and Larissa Lasutina finished with 24: 52.1 and 24: 59.0, respectively. They were subsequently disqualified for EPO and bronze medalist Beckie Scott of Canada became Olympic champion. Katerina Neumannová and Viola Bauer moved to the medal places. Overall, the two Russians were denied five medals in the 2002 games.
