Olympic Medals in the games of 1976 in Montreal
613 Medals in 23 Sports in 198 Events
Canada was first of 17.7. until 1.8. Host country of the Olympic Games. A novelty was also a boycott of several countries. 16 African countries had canceled their participation because New Zealand had previously violated South Africa's international sports spell for apartheid policies by playing against a South African rugby team. Since the IOC did not meet the demand to exclude New Zealand, another 24 African nations and South American Guyana withdrew their athletes. In contrast to China, Taiwan was invited. As a result, China also withdrew from the Olympic Games in Moscow in 1980 and first took part in Los Angeles in 1984.
Due to the terrorist attack in Munich, all security measures had been significantly strengthened to protect the athletes and the spectators. The games were opened by Queen Elisabeth II, who as Queen of the United Kingdom was also the head of state of Canada in the Olympic Stadium, which was not yet completed due to strikes by construction workers and technical problems.
There were new sports for women: basketball, handball and rowing. The decathlon of athletics was won by Bruce Jenner, who had previously set two world records. Jenner was married three times and has 6 children. The last marriage to Kris Kardashian was divorced in 2014 because of irreconcilable differences. In 2015 Bruce Jenner became the trans woman Caitlyn Jenner.
The star of the games was the 14-year-old Romanian gymnast Nadia Comăneci. She knew how to flirt with the audience and performed excellently. After her exercise on the uneven bars, the audience was initially amazed that the ad only assigned 1.00 points to her, but it soon became clear that there were only too few places to display 10.00. There had never been such a value in gymnastics before, as the top grade was considered unattainable.
In these games it was possible for the first time to detect doping using anabolic steroids. 3 medals were withdrawn in weightlifting.
Montreal had set a negative record: it took 30 years to clear Canadian $ 1.6 billion in debt.
