The German pair of figure skating Marika Kilius and Hans-Jürgen Bäumler were unlucky with the starting number. They had to start second and therefore had no chance of winning the gold medal. They won the silver medal. However, since they had already signed a professional contract before the Olympic Games, there was an IOC violation of the amateur regulations. They gave their medals in 1966 so as not to jeopardize Munich's candidacy for the 1972 Summer Games. In 1987 they were rehabilitated and were given new silver medals because the originals had disappeared.
