Medals
Since the water jumping competitions took place in 1906 at the interludes in Athens in the sea in the bay of Zea near Phaleron, a solution had to be found for the implementation. For example, a wooden frame was installed on an old ship of the Navy, which served as a tower. Spring boards were installed at heights of 4m, 8m and 12m. Jumps were made from all 3 heights, resulting in a mixture of art and high diving. From each height 3 jumps were rated by 3 judges according to the degree of difficulty and execution. A maximum of 20 points were awarded per jump, so theoretically 180 points could be achieved.
The German Gottlob Walz scored 156 of the 180 possible points and thus won the gold medal. Walz was four times European champion in diving. From 1899 to 1903 he was five times German champion and from 1901 to 1903 he was three times European champion. In 1908 he was able to win an additional bronze medal in jumping from the 1m and 3m board. In 1912 he published the book "The Art of Jumping Water in Words and Images". From 1920 he lived as director of a paper mill in Switzerland. He died in Stuttgart in 1943 during World War II, the exact date of his death is not known.
